Driving to Work is Dangerous

with No Comments

I can’t help share our next big adventure with anyone who will listen. Be it coworkers, family, or friends, I’m eager to let folks know that we’re selling all our possessions (house included) to beach it up in Mexico and Central America for a year. (Or something like that. We’re still working out the details.)

And as you’d expect with such an unconventional share, I’ve gotten all different types of responses. Many are excited for us. Some are jealous. And of course, some are scared.

But Isn’t that Dangerous?

Maybe. But, do you know what is empirically dangerous? Driving to work. 37,000 people died in the U.S. in car accidents in 2016. Thirty-seven thousand.

Think about that. You could be living your life – working day after day – and then die on your drive to work. I feel like this is (kind of) a big deal. So, I’ll say it again (this time with fancy formatting).

There is a very real possibility that you will die driving your car to work.

Your Job is Dangerous, Too

When it comes to spending money (and time), I’m all about getting the most value. Driving to work, as we’ve established, is dangerous. I have to work, of course, but I risk death every day that I have to drive to work. So, I’m going to do that as little as possible. I’m going to try to drive to work as little as possible in my life, so that I can spend my time taking those risks that do have a high reward for me.

It helps that I’m not into making purchases that probably won’t make me happy for long anyway (once I get used to it). It also helps that my year-long vacation plan includes affordable destinations with modest accommodations!

Think About It

Most working Americans literally risk their lives twice a day, five a days week, to get to a job that they’re probably wouldn’t be okay dying for. And most Americans do this – put their life on the line for their job without even thinking about it. But, if they did think about, they might actual feel bit uncomfortable with their weekday decisions.

I’d Rather Die in Mexico

Given the choice between being killed in a car accident, or being killed while vacationing and slow traveling through Mexico, I’ll take Mexico all day long!  That’s what I think of when people tell me they’re scared for me.
